100 Debates on the Environment

We’re holding 100 non-partisan all-candidate debates on the environment all across Canada, all before the next election, on October 2 & 3, 2019.

100 debates on the Environment has a simple mission: to make the environment an issue that no party and no candidate can ignore by organizing more than 100 inclusive, politically neutral, and environment-focused all-candidates debates in communities across Canada.

The debates will create a forum where voters can hear directly from candidates about their visions for the environment. They will create accountability for elected leaders and spur meaningful government action towards a sustainable future.

This project is made up of national non-profits, businesses, citizens’ groups, high schools and universities, individuals and many others. The project is being coordinated by GreenPAC and Equiterre.

Let’s create a Canada-wide conversation between candidates and constituents about the environment.

The more people who attend, the more powerful our message will be.

The Fire Within: The Stories the Earth Speaks Through Us

We are at a time when we are being called to put focus on our relationship to the Earth, the fires burn loud to draw and keep our attention.   Overwhelmed, seeming like nothing can be done, we unite to touch into the complexities of our relationship to the Earth, to ourselves as an expression of the land, to our desire to exist in harmony.  The journey of climate crisis and justice is full of all that life offers and with it comes many stories and the spectrum of emotion.

The Fire Within: Stories the Earth Speaks Through Us will be an improvised InterPlay performance where we explore the fullness of the climate justice story from our own lived experience – the grief and fear in the destruction in equal part to the precious connection we nurture as part of Earth community.  We will also invite you, the audience, to share some of your fears, hopes and questions during these firey times.

Performance Dates & Time:

Friday, September 27th @ 7pm

Saturday, September 28th @ 2pm & 7pm

Location:

Majlis Art Garden (majlis meaning “a place to sit” in Arabic)

163 Walnut Ave. (located between Queen & King, a few blocks West of Bathurst St.)

This venue is an intimate and whimsical indoor/outdoor space – so please do bring layers and a blanket if the air is cool.  To learn more visit: www.majlisarts.com

Cost:

$20 suggested donation or PWYC (pay-what-you-can)

All are welcome – this performance is appropriate for all ages depending on your child’s comfort with hearing and experiencing stories with full range of emotion.

InterPlay is an improvised practice that invites us to play with our birth right of sound, song, storytelling, movement, dance and stillness.  It is a chance to connect to our deep inner wisdom, create space for the diversity of stories within us to be told and affirm what brings us joy and hope in life. Transport Futures – Federal Election Transportation Debate

As federal election campaigning gets underway, an Abacus Data poll suggests that Canadians are far less concerned about transit than they are about the cost of living, healthcare and climate change.

Yet each of these “top 3” issues is directly connected to government policy decisions that influence personal and business transportation choices.

To ensure that voters are aware of these connections when they enter the ballot box, Transport Futures has invited candidates from the Liberals, Conservatives, New Democrats, Greens and People’s Party to debate their respective transport strategies as they pertain to road, transit, rail, airport and marine infrastructure as well as related equity, safety, technology, environmental, funding, governance and leadership issues. Ben Spurr, transportation reporter for the Toronto Star, will be moderating the debate and audience Q&A.

Seating is limited and regular rates end on September 15 so register today! For further information, please visit www.transportfutures.ca/election or email [email protected].

2019’s Last Great Beaches Cleanup of the Season

Are you looking to make a positive #impact and join a #movement of concerned citizens willing to stand up and #protect our planet?

Join Plastic Free Beach Toronto and Beaches Reduces on Sunday, September 8 for another awesome shoreline cleanup!

#Plasticpollution doesn’t belong in nature! Oceans and lakes, rivers and forests—as well as the diverse wildlife that call these habitats home—bear the burden of our waste. If current trends continue, scientists predict there will be more plastic than fish (by weight) in the sea by 2050. It’s also estimated that 80 percent of #oceanlitter originates on land!!

Why participate?

We have an enormous impact on our world, and many of us now want to make a difference. Together, we can turn things around for today and the generations to come! Be a part of the #solution on September 8th!

Where: Donald D. Summerville Outdoor Olympic Pool (on the beach in front of the building. Look out for Plastic Free Beach Toronto’s awesome cleanup flag!)

When: Sunday, September 29th, 10am- 12pm

Who: Everyone! Tell your neighbours, coworkers, friends and relatives! Share far and wide! *Cleanups are also kid-friendly so bring the whole family 😉

GOALS OF THIS CLEANUP:
Make the shoreline clean for the community
Save wildlife from our unnecessary pollution
Meet like-minded people
Get outside & appreciate nature
Create awareness around the trash we produce

There are water refill stations nearby so please bring your reusable canisters 🙂 Also-don’t forget your fitted garden gloves and of course all your smiles and good vibes! Please bring anything you think might be helpful to collect litter including kitchen tongs, pokers, and/or litter grabbers. We will have buckets, a container for sharp items, and extra garbage bags for litter collection!

We’ll also explore CJTO’s grassroots & youth-led organizing structure, guiding principles, and theory of change. Finally, we’ll end with a short canvass training so you’ll feel comfortable talking about climate justice when you’re petitioning, and really with everyone you know! This orientation will be grounding and informative for not only newcomers but also CJTO members who have been coming out to meetings and actions.

ABOUT CLIMATE JUSTICE TORONTO:

Climate Justice Toronto (CJTO) is organizing to unite young people from all movement backgrounds in the GTA to send a message to our governments and the broader public: the only people who will be making decisions about our future is us, the people affected, and especially the most marginalized among us. Through solidarity and alliance-building, direct action, creative storytelling, and electoral organizing, we will forge a just transition towards a decarbonized economy, and a Green New Deal for all.
