Time4Action May 5th: A Green-NDP One-Time Electoral Alliance for Climate
Real action on the climate crisis MUST be the result of the next federal election!
We can’t wait for Trudeau to start governing like we’re in a climate emergency. And the NDP and Greens haven’t built enough power to form government.
So, what can we do?
350.org and their allies have launched the Climate Emergency Alliance. They want Green Party Leader Annamie Paul and NDP leader Jagmeet Singh to set aside their partisan differences.
Both parties must pledge that, in ridings where one has a chance of winning and the other is in third or fourth place, the trailing candidate will stand down and support the other.
Modelling identifies 77 ridings where the NDP would have a better chance, if the less popular Green candidate dropped off the ballot. In five ridings, the Greens would do better.
Would such an alliance work? Should it even be tried? Join us next week to look at the pros and cons!
Katie Rae Perfitt has been a Community Organizer with 350.org. since 2015. Of course, most of us know that 350 is the international movement founded by heroic activist and author Bill McKibbon and others to end fossil fuels and build a world of community-led renewable energy for all. Katie first got involved with the climate movement during her time in Halifax with Divest Dal – a fossil fuel divestment campaign at Dalhousie University. Since then she’s been involved in anti-fracking and anti-pipeline work across Turtle Island, and supports the participation of young people in the fight to keep fossil fuels in the ground.
