The Big Ask – January Community Climate Meet-Up Beaches EastYork
What is the BIG ASK? As outlined in the petition from late 2019 that started all of this: we want our MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith to pressure the Liberal government to adopt more aggressive climate targets and milestones. This is timely given that Canada committed to net-zero by 2050 with milestones every 5 years – but with our 4-year electoral cycle these milestones effectively defer real action and turn it into a political football. We have 8 years of global carbon budget remaining to keep to 1.5 – we have no more time to waste. We need a roadmap. And we want to hold our political leaders accountable at a grassroots level, on our terms. For this, we need credibility. We need a base.
We want to cultivate this base by mobilizing the people of this riding, slowly but surely, around climate and environmental action. Would it not be effective to have a place to meet regularly, to collaborate on our various efforts, and to be united by one big ask?
Come defy complacency, fear and the general odds of keeping to 1.5 by coming to our first meet up of 2020 on January 14th. Let’s make 2020 about building a steady groundswell of support for more aggressive federal climate action, and community collaboration.
Date: Tuesday, January 14th at 7pm until 8:30
Venue: Community Centre 55
Purpose: 1) To reaffirm this overarching goal (aka big ask) for riding constituents, 2) To plan petition delivery, 3) To brainstorm ways to grow the base
Format: Snacks, mingling and mini-workshop format so we can come out with clear action points
Bring: BRING A FRIEND FROM THE RIDING! And if you can manage, a small snack to share.
Suggested donation: bring some change! a 1-2$ donation for the community centre.
Best wishes for 2020 and we look forward to meeting you and collaborating in this momentous new year!
