People in marginalized communities suffer systemic discrimination, racist abuse and violence and higher rates of Covid infection and death. In Dentonia Park in June, when a racist assault was followed by racist, neglectful policing, a coalition of union and local groups came together to demand justice and mobilized the community to stand up to racism in one of the city’s most diverse communities.
The climate crisis has been caused by cumulative carbon emissions over the last century by the most powerful economies, yet it is people in the countries in the global south who are bearing the brunt of the impact as many are forced to migrate away from flood, fire, drought and famine. Ongoing Canadian colonialism forces pipelines through Indigenous land to pursue oil profits while scientists warn that we have to rapidly shift to low carbon energy production to mitigate the climate crisis.
How do we ensure solutions to the climate crisis are inclusive to all regardless of their background or the colour of their skin?
