OPG & Enbridge vs. Our Climate & Our Pocketbooks

Thur. March 12, 7 – 9 p.m.
Friends House, 60 Lowther Ave (St. George subway station)

Doug Ford wants to ramp up the output of our gas-fired power plants by more than 300% by 2025, and 400% by 2040.

To help fuel this massive increase in fossil fuel electricity generation, Enbridge wants to import fracked gas from Pennsylvania by building a giant pipeline in Hamilton — a pipeline that would drive a stake through the heart of Hamilton’s Spencer Creek provincially significant wetland and raise Enbridge’s gas rates by $120 million.

If Doug Ford and Enbridge get their way, Ontario will not be able to meet its 2030 Climate Protection target.

According to Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), the greenhouse gas pollution from Ontario’s gas plants will increase by 8.2 mega tonnes by 2025. This is DOUBLE the forecast annual greenhouse gas pollution from Teck’s Frontier tar sands mine which was recently withdrawn largely due to public opposition.

At the same time, the provincial government is moving forward with extending and rebuilding our aging nuclear infrastructure, at very high cost and risk to the Ontario tax- and ratepayer.

Fortunately, there is no need for this pipeline, increased use of natural gas, or for the nuclear rebuilds. Ontario can keep its lights on at a lower cost and with much less pollution by restoring and expanding energy efficiency programs and by contracting for low-cost water power from Quebec as well as made-in-ON green energy.

Jack Gibbons is Chair of the Ontario Clean Air Alliance. The Ontario Clean Air Alliance led the successful campaign to phase-out Ontario’s dirty coal plants and is now working to move Ontario towards a 100% renewable future.
