How to be an Ally
About this Event
Racism has no place in our world.
For businesses and organizations, one of the first steps we need to take towards eradicating racism is to accept that we are often part of the problem. Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) workshops help businesses and employees become aware of the racialized systems that exist in our workplaces, and give us the tools and knowledge to begin to address these barriers head on.
We invite you to join a free, online DEI workshop with Alden Habacon – one of Canada’s leading diversity and inclusion strategists and facilitators – facilitated by Vancity Community Investment Bank. This workshop has unlimited participation, so we invite any and all interested organizations to attend on Thursday, October 15.
Following an online poll to understand what type of DEI workshop would bring the most value to members in our community, we will be moving ahead with a session on:
How to be an Ally – This session will look at how to respond to incidents of non-inclusive language and behaviour (such as racist or sexist comments or humour, microaggressions, and other forms of unintended discriminatory behaviour) in the community and the workplace. It will also provide an understanding of “unearned advantage”, and the responsibility in using one’s unearned advantage to undo patterns of social inequity.
At Vancity Community Investment Bank, we want everyone to have the opportunity to listen and learn from a DEI workshop, so that businesses can increase their awareness of how to foster a truly inclusive and diverse workplace.
We hope that you can attend, and learn with us. We’re looking forward to going on this journey with you.
