Are you interested in learning about how to reduce waste in your home and your community? Would you like to meet like-minded community members from the Bathurst-Finch area and neighbouring communities?

If so, join us at the following four interactive online waste reduction workshops!

All events are held on Thursdays from 7:00 to 8:30 pm.

November 12: Reducing food waste and saving money

Learn about Toronto’s avoidable food waste crisis, and get practical tips on food date labels (the #1 reason food is wasted at home), how to tell whether food is good or bad, how to store food to reduce waste, and more.

Special guest: Rose Barcarse, Manager of Community Programs, Second Harvest Food Bank

November 19: Reduce & reuse: Towards zero-waste homes

Plastics and waste is a big issue, and its on our mind during the pandemic. How can we address this environmental and health issue by starting at home? Get practical tips for reducing, reusing and recycling your household waste – and get ideas on ways to help build a zero waste city.

Special guest: Emily Alfred, Senior Waste Campaigner, Toronto Environmental Alliance

December 3: Clothing repair & reducing textile waste (7-8:30 pm)

The textile industry has significant environmental and climate impacts. Learn strategies for reducing your clothing waste – while having fun! Get an introduction to easy clothing repairs and hand-sewing skills, including ways to make reusable face masks.

Special guest: Munira Abukar, Project Coordinator- Social Enterprise, Elza Lusufova, Sewing Hub Instructor, Scadding Court Community Centre

December 17: Creating zero-waste buildings and neighbourhoods (7-8:30 pm)

Now that you have reduced your own waste…how can you connect with others to reduce waste outside your home? Learn how to build a team to reduce waste in your apartment building, neighbourhood, faith community or community centre.

Special guest: Sayan Sivanesan, Zero Waste High-Rise Project Coordinator, Toronto Environmental Alliance

Register for one event or the entire workshop series!

Bonus: a free sewing repair kit will be offered to the first 25 local registrants who attend workshop #3, and an eco-friendly gift offered to the first 60 local registrants who attend at least three of the four sessions.

Organized by the Bathurst-Finch Civic Action Network (BFCAN), Bathurst-Finch Unison Hub, and the Toronto Environmental Alliance (TEA).
