Webinar: The Proposed Teck Mine, and the Barriers to Climate Action Posed by Canada’s Oil and Gas Lobby

In the midst of a climate emergency, the federal government is considering approving the largest oil sands mine ever proposed – a clear indication of the influence Big Oil and its political allies have in Canada. The proposed Teck Frontier mine will violate Indigenous rights and have significant deleterious impacts on wildlife and the environment, including spewing millions of tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere every year until 2067. The debate around approving the mine also distracts governments from the conversation Canada desperately needs on economic diversification and the future of jobs.
Teck is just the latest example of political pressure from the oil and gas sector influencing Canadian governments to make decisions that benefit corporate profit interests at the expense of our health, social services and collective future.
This webinar will outline the many ways in which the oil and gas lobby has been a barrier to action on climate change in Canada – even as the science of climate change becomes more dire.
