Environment Seminar Series: Introduction to the NATO Climate Change and Security Centre of Excellence with Mathieu BussièresRe

Mathieu Bussières joined the Canadian Department of National Defence in 2004. From 2020 to 2023, Mathieu served as the Defence Counsellor at the Joint Canadian Delegation to NATO, where he played a pivotal role in shaping NATO’s defence and deterrence policies.

Prior to this, from 2016 to 2020, Mathieu was a program manager within the Directorate of Strategic Coordination and Outreach, where he developed and oversaw outreach programs and played a crucial role in guiding the next generation of defence policy experts through the Policy Officer Recruitment Program (PORP). His efforts in fostering connections between defence and security experts have left a lasting impact, including through the Mobilizing Insights in Defence and Security (MINDS) program.

As Deputy Director in the Directorate of Western Hemisphere Policy from 2015 to 2016, he led a team that provided essential advice on national matters, particularly in strengthening Canada-US defence relations. His work with the Permanent Joint Board on Defence (PJBD) and NORAD further underscored his capability in managing bilateral and multilateral defence relationships.

Throughout his career, Mathieu has held various positions within the Policy Group, the Canadian Joint Operational Command (CJOC), and NATO Headquarters. His contributions have spanned a wide array of critical areas, from defence policy and operational planning support for Canadian Armed Forces operations both domestically and internationally.

Holding a master’s degree in political science and fluently bilingual in French and English, Mathieu Bussières continues to lead with distinction as the Director of CCASCOE, drawing on his extensive experience to advance the organization’s mission in climate security.

Mathieu is the proud father of two boys and a sport enthusiast.
