In this time of profound change as we face up to racism and colonization, it’s important to have the critical tools needed to be part of the solution. Decolonizing the Heart (DTH) has that tool in our definition of decolonization:
Decolonization: “Being guided in critically examining the historical, social, economic and political patterns and systems of power that have been formative in developing one’s own and one’s ancestors’ worldview and working to dismantle and transform one’s way of seeing and being in the world.” © 2019 D.M.L.
We recognize, from experience, that we need to reconcile with our own pasts in order to reconcile and build good relations with others. To this end, over the two-day workshop we use storytelling, critical discussions of current events, a series of custom-made videos, object-relations theory, Medicine Wheel and Seven Grandmother teachings, and various other tools, to take us gently but deeply into learning how we learn to think the way we think. We examine how the social construction of race and white supremacy has been used to justify colonial and imperialist practices and how they inform our everyday relations – from overt racist attacks to micro-aggressions.
We work from the premise that “All conflicts arise from the failure to have needs met”. We explore how we have become out of balance spiritually, emotionally, physically, and intellectually over generations because of an economic system that isn’t designed to meet everyone’s needs. We examine the capitalist-patriarchy exchange economy and compare it to gift economy theory and practice. We also examine non-state ways of social organization.
Our aim is to provide participants with, among other things: the skills they need to de-escalate conflict; call people in rather than out; how to have difficult conversations; how to turn discomfort into learning moments for all.
