Cherry Beach Litter Pick-Up
Join the Sierra Club Canada Foundation on Tuesday August 20, 2019 for a litter pick-up event along one of Toronto’s best beaches! We will be meting at the bottom of the Cherry Street Loop (1 Cherry Street) at 6:30PM to begin the cleanup. Appropriate gloves, supplies and snacks will be provided. Let’s tackle a small piece of the #ProblemWithPlastics together!
Plastics have become a staple in modern life due to its durability and low cost. Yet as our reliance on plastic has continued to grow, it has become clear that the effects of plastic production and pollution pose several threats to our environment. Marine litter specifically is extremely harmful to both our waterways and aquatic life. According to the Government of Canada, around 80% of marine litter enters the water from the land (2019). In 2010, about 8,000 tonnes of plastic waste was released into Canadian waterways, which equates to the weight of about 75 Blue Whales (Government of Canada, 2019). Through our #ProblemWithPlastics Campaign we hope to push for a plastic-waste free society while protecting our natural environment from the harmful effects of plastic pollution.
