SUMMARY:Our Pension Our Questions
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDear Andre,\nStarting October 6th, Canadians have a rare opportunity to question the executives of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) about how they are managing our national retirement fund in a rapidly changing world.\nCPPIB manages the retirement savings of over 22 million Canadians. At $864 billion, the Canada Pension Plan is one of the largest pension funds in the world. That makes CPPIB’s investment decisions a matter of public interest.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe first CPPIB public meetings have been scheduled ( https://www.cppinvestments.com/public-meetings/ ):\n\nTuesday, October 6th, 6-7pm PT – Vancouver\nThursday, October 8th, 6-7pm ET – Ottawa \n\nMeetings will also be scheduled for a city in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland & Labrador, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick over the next few weeks.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAhead of the public meetings, we are calling on CPPIB to:\n\nPresent a credible climate plan showing how the Canada Pension Plan will reduce emissions across its investments and protect our retirement future.\nStop investing in fossil fuel expansion that puts Canadians’ retirement security at risk.\nRespect Indigenous rights by ensuring investments uphold free, prior and informed consent.\n\nSign the petition today ( https://win.newmode.net/shiftaction/cpp-public-meetings-petition ) and join thousands of Canadians calling on our national pension manager to protect our retirement future.\n \nIn May last year, CPPIB abandoned its commitment ( https://www.shiftaction.ca/news/2025/5/21/cppib-abandons-net-zero-commitment ) to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. It now has no disclosed climate action plan, no net-zero emissions commitment, no goals to invest more in profitable climate solutions, and no exclusions on financing the primary drivers of climate change – oil, gas and coal. In 2025 alone, CPPIB invested at least an additional $7 billion in oil and gas ( https://www.shiftaction.ca/news/2025/11/05/cppib-7billion-fossil-fuels ).\nPerhaps unsurprisingly, CPPIB is now facing a legal challenge ( https://www.shiftaction.ca/news/2025/10/23/cppib-legal-challenge-over-climate ) brought by young Canadians who allege that it is failing to properly manage climate-related financial risks while investing billions in fossil fuels. The case will go before the Ontario Superior Court in November.\nAnd questions about governance are growing. Three of CPPIB’s 12 current directors have ties to fossil fuel companies, including a director appointed in June who also serves on the board of Canadian Natural Resources Limited, one of Canada’s largest oil and gas producers ( https://www.shiftaction.ca/news/2026/6/2/cnrl-conflicted-director ).\nNow, CPPIB is taking on an even more prominent role in Canada’s investment agenda. Just last week, it partnered with the federal government to co-host the Canada Investment Summit and announced a $50-billion investment fund with Brookfield ( https://www.cppinvestments.com/newsroom/cpp-investments-and-brookfield-launch-50-billion-maple-fund-to-pursue-large-scale-investments-across-canada/ ) focused on “critical infrastructure and strategic industries across Canada”. That makes questions about CPPIB’s investment strategy – including its approach to climate risk and Indigenous rights – increasingly important.\nThese public meetings present a rare opportunity for Canadians to sit face to face with CPPIB executives and ask them how they are managing climate risk, respecting Indigenous rights and protecting the long-term interests of CPP members. Find a meeting near you, register to attend ( https://www.cppinvestments.com/public-meetings/ ) and make your voice heard.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
