SUMMARY:The Many vs. The Money: Teach-In
DESCRIPTION:This September, the CEOs of BlackRock, Blackstone and other representatives of the global 1% are coming to Toronto at the invitation of Prime Minister Mark Carney.\nHis summit in downtown Toronto is designed to simultaneously auction off Canadian public resources and infrastructure — from our airports and water systems, to highways and ports — and finance destructive megaprojects like AI data centers, weapons factories, and toxic pipelines.\nWe refuse to let our futures be decided behind closed doors by the 200 richest CEOs on earth. We’re holding our own summit on September 12-13. And on September 14th movements and communities across this city are coming together to crash theirs. We refuse to let the global 1% descend on our city unopposed.\n \nOrganizing the Many to Defeat the Money\n\nWhile CEOs and foreign investors gather at a luxury hotel downtown to buy up what remains of our shared public infrastructure, we will be planning the fightback at the “Many versus the Money” counter-summit at OCAD University.\nConvened by the Council of Canadians, 8th Fire Rising and World BEYOND War, the counter-summit will open with a keynote conference featuring journalist Naomi Klein (author of End Times Fascism) and U.S. scholar and activist Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor (author of From #BlackLivesMatter to Black Liberation) on Saturday, September 12 at 5pm. They will be joined by a special musical guest, folk singer Carsie Blanton.\nOn Sunday, September 13, the counter-summit will continue with an all-day teach-in, bringing together organizers, researchers and front-line activists from various movements (labour, Indigenous, tenants, climate, anti-war, migrant rights, Palestine solidarity, and others).\nPanels will look at the role these corporate elites play in the worsening crises working-class people face and how the many can organize to defeat the money.\nThe counter-summit will end on Sunday evening with a Resistance Concert in Grange Park featuring a range of performers, vendors, and cultural activities.\nOn Monday September 14, as Carney’s privatization summit starts, we’ll be there to greet it. We will join a broad swathe of movements, communities, and organizations to gather en masse for a major rally, march and protest against Carney’s summit, starting at Nathan Phillips Square at 6PM.\nThe weekend’s counter-summit and Monday’s protest will also build momentum for upcoming mobilizations in Toronto like the March for Migrant Justice (September 20) and the Grassy Narrows River Run (September 23).\n\n
