SUMMARY:Learn to Draw: Deep Ocean Ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n\n\nA webinar hosted by Sierra Club BC and Dr. Julius Csotonyi\nWednesday, March 5, at 10:00 AM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for our first Learn to Draw of the year! For this webinar, we will dive in the deep end to discuss one of the most endangered ecosystems – Deep Ocean Ecosystems!  The diverse marine life that thrives in these ecosystems amongst unique environments like hot hydrothermal vents or cold-water corals. They may be difficult to visit, but deep ocean ecosystems can be found right off the coast of Vancouver Island!\nDr. Julius Csotonyi will walk us through a detailed drawing of these underwater areas, and the beings that live there including the mysterious anglerfish! We will learn more about these systems and form deeper understandings on the pressures they face from underwater mining and climate change.\nThis one-hour webinar is open to learners of all ages, so we are inviting teachers, students, parents, and caregivers to participate! All you need is paper, pencils, an eraser and pencil crayons.\nJoin us as we weave art and science together on Wednesday, March 5 at 10 a.m. PT! If you can’t make it don’t worry, we’ll be sending the art lesson recording to everyone who registers.\nCheck out these resources!\n\nSend your artwork to your local representative to help care for at-risk ecosystems. You can find your local representative here.\n\n\nCall for a provincial law that prioritizes biodiversity and ecosystem health. You can send a letter using our letter-writing tool.\n\n\nAre you on Facebook? Join our Facebook group for artists!\n\n\nLearn how to say ocean in the language of the Indigenous community on whose territory you live. Visit FirstVoices.com to find words, songs and stories about beavers from different First Nations.\n\n\nLearn more about our education program.\n\n\nPlease consider making a donation today to help us continue running free art lessons like this one. Donate here.\n\n\nAbout the artist\nDr. Julius Csotonyi is a scientific illustrator and natural history fine artist. He has a scientific background in ecology (MSc) and microbiology (PhD) which has taken him to study sensitive ecosystems, from sand dunes in the Rocky Mountain parks to hydrothermal vents at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.\nThese experiences have fuelled a strong resolve to work toward preserving the earth’s biota. Painting biological subjects is one means that he uses to both enhance public awareness of biological diversity and to motivate concern for its welfare.   \nHe paints murals and panels that have appeared in numerous museums (e.g. the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History), press release images for scientific publications, books, stamp sets (e.g. the 2018 “Sharks of Canada” set for Canada Post), and coins for the Royal Canadian Mint. His work is viewable on his online gallery, http://csotonyi.com ( http://csotonyi.com/ )\n\n\n\n\n\n
