SUMMARY:Plastic Pellet Blitz: A Community Science Event
DESCRIPTION:Join the University of Toronto (U of T) Trash Team for their first-ever Plastic Pellet Blitz, a cleanup focused on a less familiar source of microplastic pollution called pre-production plastic pellets! Plastic pellets are the building blocks used to make everyday plastic products, and, unfortunately, their small size makes it so they can easily become pollution. In fact, every year, the U of T Trash Team finds plastic pellets in trash capture devices deployed along Toronto’s Waterfront.\nThis event supports Operation Sweep the Creek, a U of T Trash Team Pollution Prevention Project that addresses plastic pellet pollution at the source.\nEvent Details:\n\nDate: Saturday, August 17th, 2024\nTime: Please arrive by 9:45 am to check in! We will begin promptly at 10 am and conclude at noon.\nWhere: Sir Casimir Gzowski Park Beach (2001 Lake Shore Blvd W) under the picnic shelter near Al Pa Cones (view map)\nWhat to bring: All supplies will be provided. Please dress for the weather. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided. Bottle-filling stations are available at the park, so remember to bring your reusable water bottle. Washroom facilities are available at the park.\n\nCancellation Policy:\nThe event will run rain or shine but will be canceled if there is a greater than 70% chance of thunderstorms or other hazardous weather. If there is a cancellation, registrants will be emailed by 8:00 am on the morning of the event. Remember to dress appropriately!\nThis event supports the Floatable Waste Collaborative Action in Lake Ontario and Toronto’s Inner Harbour project collaboratively delivered by Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, University of Toronto Trash Team, Swim Drink Fish, and A Greener Future.\nThis important work also contributes to the Toronto Inner Harbour Floatables Strategy, a collaborative strategy to reduce plastic pollution and other floating litter in the harbour. It is led in partnership with the U of T Trash Team, Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, PortsToronto, City of Toronto, Swim Drink Fish, Waterfront Business Improvement Area, Harbourfront Centre and Waterfront Toronto.\n
