SUMMARY:Today’s Catch: Trash Trap Dive
DESCRIPTION:Last year, the University of Toronto (U of T) Trash Team’s Fighting Floatables program removed >230 kg of plastic pollution from the Toronto Harbour, including more than 60,000 pieces of microplastics. By monitoring plastic pollution and other anthropogenic debris captured by trash traps, we’re better able to understand the issue and inform local solutions upstream.\nOn Saturday July 20, join our Trash Trap Dive for a one-of-a-kind opportunity to peek behind the scenes and learn how to characterize litter diverted by trash traps on the Toronto Waterfront.\nYou’ll have the unique opportunity to:\n\nMeet members of the Toronto Inner Harbour Floatables Strategy\nGet hands-on with a team of researchers\nLearn how we characterize both large and small items collected by trash traps\nLearn about microplastics, where they come from and how we can prevent them from reaching Lake Ontario and eventually the ocean.\n\nEvent details:\n\nDate: Saturday, July 20th, 2024\n\n\nTime: Please arrive by 9:45 am to check in! We will begin promptly at 10 am and conclude at noon. We encourage you to stick around and visit displays during our sister event, Today’s Catch: Lakeside Litter, taking place at the same location.\nWhere: Marina Quay West (539 Queen Quay W, Toronto). View map\nWhat to bring: All supplies will be provided, please dress for the weather.\n\nCancellation policy:\nThe event will run rain or shine, but will be cancelled if there is a greater than 70% chance of thunderstorm or other hazardous weather. Registrants will be emailed by 8:00 am on the morning of the event if there is a cancellation.\nThis event supports the Floatable Waste Collaborative Action in Lake Ontario and Toronto’s Inner Harbour project collaboratively delivered by Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, University of Toronto Trash Team, Swim Drink Fish, and A Greener Future.\nThis important work also contributes to the Toronto Inner Harbour Floatables Strategy, a collaborative strategy to reduce plastic pollution and other floating litter in the harbour. It is led in partnership with the U of T Trash Team, Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, PortsToronto, City of Toronto, Swim Drink Fish, Waterfront Business Improvement Area, Harbourfront Centre, and Waterfront Toronto.\n
