SUMMARY:Fossil fuel lock-in and resistance in Eastern Canada
DESCRIPTION:The forthcoming report “Mapping Fossil Fuel Lock-In and Contestation in Eastern Canada” sheds light on the state of the fossil fuel industry in Eastern Canada—an overlooked region in energy debates in the country. The report maps the extensive existing and proposed fossil fuel infrastructure in each of the five Eastern provinces, highlighting opposition movements and new projects in the pipeline that could potentially further “lock in” increased carbon emissions. The report, co-published by the CCPA–NS and the Corporate Mapping Project, is set for release on June 6. Join us to hear from the authors (Darin Brooks, Angela Carter, Emily Eaton, Éric Pineault, J. P. Sapinski), Christine Saulnier (CCPA–NS) and Mélanie Busby (Common Front for the Energy Transition). Cheryl Malone will give a welcome and territory acknowledgement. Simultaneous French translation will be provided. – Le rapport « Extractivisme fossile, verrou carbone et mobilisation sociale dans l’Est du Canada : un état des lieux » offre un portrait détaillé de l’industrie des hydrocarbures dans l’Est canadien, région qui ne figure que rarement dans les discussions sur la question énergétique au pays. Cette nouvelle publication analyse l’infrastructure fossile en place ainsi que les projets proposés dans chacune des cinq provinces de l’Est. Elle met l’accent les mouvements écocitoyens s’y opposant et sur développements récents qui risquent de plonger la région dans une dépendance accrue aux hydrocarbures. Le rapport, qui sera rendu public le 6 juin prochain, est publié conjointement par le CCPA, Nouvelle-Écosse et le Corporate Mapping Project.
