DESCRIPTION:To mark Black History month we are hosting a webinar discussion on Canada’s colonial role in the Caribbean, past and present, from Canadian trade relations with the slave plantation economy to gunboat diplomacy and Canadian banking power in the late 1800s.\nThis event will feature discussion and Q&A with Paula Hastings (author of Dominion over Palm and Pine: A History of Canadian Aspirations in the British Caribbean) and Peter James Hudson (author of Bankers and Empire: How Wall Street Colonized the Caribbean).\nHosted by the Canadian Foreign Policy Institute\nModerated by Bianca Mugyenyi, CFPI\nSPEAKERS:\nPaula Hastings is author of Dominion over Palm and Pine: A History of Canadian Aspirations in the British Caribbean. She is currently Assistant Professor of History in the Department of Historical and Cultural Studies at UTSC and in the Tri-Campus Graduate Program at the University of Toronto. Her research and teaching center on the imperial and global contexts of Canada’s political, social and cultural histories during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. She is interested, more specifically, in Canada’s evolving relationship with Britain and the Caribbean since Confederation and in the histories of imperialism/colonialism, race, migration, and nationalism.\nPeter James Hudson is Associate Professor of African American Studies and History. Peter James Hudson is a historian who completed his Ph.D. in the American Studies Program at New York University. His research interests are in the history of capitalism, white supremacy, and U.S. imperialism; the intellectual and political-economic history of the Caribbean and the Black world; and the history of Black radicalism and global anti-imperialism. He is the author of Bankers and Empire: How Wall Street Colonized the Caribbean (University of Chicago Press, 2017).\n
