SUMMARY:Willis and White Memorial Lecture with Zinta Zommers: What Hope for Climate Action?
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Lecture\nThe talk will explore progress in climate action, reviewing the recent results of the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change Report on Impacts and Adaptation. Zinta will highlight risks of delaying action but also explain innovative work by the United Nations to anticipate climate shocks in the world’s most vulnerable places.\nAbout the Speaker\nZinta Zommers is a Humanitarian Affairs Officer with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. She is a specialist in risk management and anticipatory action, climate change adaptation and loss and damage. She was a Lead Author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report on Land and Food Security and is an author of the IPCC’s forthcoming Sixth Assessment Synthesis Report. Zinta has worked with the United Nations in a variety of capacities – in Kenya with the Chief Scientist’s Office of UN Environment, in Germany with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction and in Sierra Leone with the Food and Agriculture Organization, where she helped lead the response to the Freetown landslides. In 2015 she joined the UN Secretary General’s Climate Change Support Team, supporting the negotiation of the Paris Climate Change Agreement. Zinta has a M.Phil. in Development Studies and a D.Phil. in Zoology from the University of Oxford, where she was a Rhodes scholar and a Junior Research Fellow.  She has authored two books on early warning systems and adaptation to climate change.\nRegister now.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContact Information\n\nPeter Aitken\nevents.environment@utoronto.ca ( mailto:events.environment@utoronto.ca )\n\n\n
