SUMMARY:Implementing a Just Transition: Leading Global Practices for a Just Transition
DESCRIPTION:Governments around the world are moving forward with the development of policy and actions for just transitions of their economies. In this session, you will see how other countries are dealing with this process — the challenges they’ve experienced, the solutions they’ve encountered, what worked best. Our distinguished panel of international experts will share their knowledge and experience leading national and international commissions that put people at the centre of climate, social, and economic policy development.\nFEATURED PANELISTS\n\n\n\nJim Skea is professor of sustainable energy at Imperial College London, with research interests in energy, climate change, and technological innovation. His current main role is as co-chair of IPCC Working Group III for the 6th assessment cycle. He was research director of the UK Energy Research Centre (2004-12) and director of the Policy Studies Institute (1998-2004). He has operated at the interface between research, policy-making, and business throughout his career. He was a member of the UK Committee on Climate Change from its inception in 2008 until 2018, and is currently the chair of Scotland’s Just Transition Commission.\n\n\n\n\n\nSam Smith is the director of the Just Transition Centre, working for a just transition for workers and communities. The Centre was established by the International Trade Union Confederation and partners to help unions and their allies get good plans for just transition at all levels. Previously, Sam was the global climate and energy leader for World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the world’s largest conservation organization.\n\n\n\n\n\nBrian Motherway is head of the Energy Efficiency Division at the International Energy Agency (IEA), a French-based organization made up of 30 member countries and eight association countries, which works with governments and industry to shape a secure and sustainable energy future for all. In his current role, Brian oversees a range of analytical and outreach programmes supporting energy efficiency globally. Prior to joining the IEA, he was chief executive of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland.\n\n\nMODERATOR\n\n\n\nDr. Tamara Krawchenko (BA, MPA, PhD) is an assistant professor in the School of Public Administration and a member of the Institute for Integrated Energy Systems at the University of Victoria, Canada. Her research explores the role of the public sector in supporting a just transition to low-carbon economies in Canada and internationally and is particularly focused on transitions in oil-dependent economies and rural regions.\n\n\n
