Youth are leading the discussion on climate justice in our cities and on the world stage. How do young leaders maintain hope while facing the defining challenge of our time? Listen and learn from internationally recognized youth advocates in the fight for climate justice.\nThis event is organized in partnership with Fridays For Future Toronto.\nAbout Our Speakers:\n\n\n\n\n\n \nNaomi Leung (they/she) is an 18-year-old racial and climate justice organizer and Chinese Malaysian settler on unceded and unsurrendered Coast Salish territories. They are a first-year student at the University of British Columbia studying sciences. Naomi has a background organizing for climate justice education to be taught in K-12 schools across so-called “British Columbia” with Climate Education Reform BC, and with Sustainabiliteens, a youth climate action group in Metro Vancouver. As an asian queer person of colour, Naomi organizes with the understanding of how the environmental movement has historically excluded, erased and undermined voices like hers. This is why in the fight for climate justice she aims to de-center the white perspective and actively dismantle elitism, white supremacy, and all forms of colonial violence that take form in herself and her community.\nhttps://www.sustainabiliteens.org/ \nhttps://www.climateeducationreformbc.ca/ \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \nAutumn Peltier is a water protector and referred to as a “Water Warrior” who has been advocating for the protection of Nibi & Mother Earth since the age of 7. Her film “The Water Walker” gained international acclaim as Autumn shared the reality that exists across our land and her journey to address the UN in NYC.  She was inspired and mentored by her Great Auntie Josephine Mandamin, former Chief Water Commissioner of the Anishinabek Nation.\nAn incredibly decorated 17-year-old Anishinaabe-Kwe and citizen of the Wiikwemkong Unceded Territory; Manitoulin Island, a First Nation of the Anishinabek Nation member; currently residing in Ottawa Canada.\nMs. Peltier has gained international recognition and emphasizes the connection of the Anishinabek to the land & water and their role to protect the lifeline of Mother Earth.\nAutumn remains focused on bringing to the forefront the attention and need for clean water across First Nations.\nAutumn Peltier was appointed the Anishinabek Nation Chief Water Commissioner in June, 2019.  Ms. Peltier’s influence and vision have been recognized as “30 under 30” by North America for Environmental Education.\nIn 2019, 2020 & 2021 Autumn Peltier has consistently been named in the “100 Most Influential People” across multiple platforms.\nAutumn’s efforts and passion have put her on global stages in Canada, US, Europe and continue inspiring today’s youth and societies around the world.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \nWinner of the 2016 International Children’s Peace Prize, Kehkashan Basu is an iconic global influencer, environmentalist, champion of women and children’s rights, TEDx speaker, Climate Reality Mentor, author, musician, peace and sustainability campaigner. A Forbes 30 Under 30 and the first-ever Winner of the Voices Youth Gorbachev-Schultz Legacy Award for her work on nuclear disarmament, Kehkashan is a UN-HR Champion, a National Geographic Young Explorer, a UN-Habitat Young City Champion, the Regional Organizing Partner for North America for the NGO Major Group and one of Canada’s Top25 Women of Influence. She is the Founder-President of the global social innovation enterprise Green Hope Foundation, which works at a grassroots level in 25 countries. She has spoken at over 200 United Nations and other global fora across 25 countries. She is the youngest Trustee of the Parliament of the World’s Religions, Council Lead of the Toronto-St. Paul’s Constituency Youth Council, Canada, Winner of the World Literacy Award for Significant Contribution to Literacy by a Young Person, Winner of Canada’s Global Energy Show Emerging Leader Award, Winner of the Pax Christi Toronto Teacher of Peace Award and a Co-Leader of the UN Women Generation Equality Forum Action Coalition on Feminist Action for Climate Justice. She continues to work tirelessly to amplify the voices of young people, women and girls, in decision-making processes.\n\n\n\n \nAbout Our Moderator:\n\n\n\n\n\n \nJessica Green is an Associate Professor of  Political Science at the University of Toronto. She is cross-appointed in the School of Environment and has previously held positions at Case Western University (in Cleveland, OH) and New York University (in NYC).\nShe is interested in the ways that global institutions, both public and private, can provide environmental public goods. Her book, Rethinking Private Authority: Agents and Entrepreneurs in Global Environmental Governance received the 2015 Harold and Margaret Sprout Award for best book in environmental politics from the International Studies Association, the 2015 Lynton Keith Caldwell Award from the American Political Science Association, and the Levine Prize. In 2017, she received the Emerging Young Scholar Award from APSA’s Science Technology and Environmental Policy Section. Her work has appeared in International Organization, Global Environmental Politics, Nature and Nature Climate Change, among others.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
