These precarious conditions make them vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. The depth and extent of sexual harassment and gender-based violence in the garment industry is rarely acknowledged or reported.\nAs this informal economy remains the main source of employment in the global south, it is crucial that violence and discrimination against informal workers is addressed. Under international law, governments are responsible for protecting the rights of their citizens and residents, but failing that corporations are being called on to address these issues through improved oversight of global supply chains.
