SUMMARY:Singing for Change with Tony Turner
DESCRIPTION:Tony Turner is a singer-songwriter and resident of Nanaimo, BC but for decades honed his song craft in the Ottawa folk scene. With a rich baritone singing voice and armed with his acoustic guitar and harmonica, Tony walks a thoughtful and sometimes humorous musical path with his portraits of nature, working folks and modern society. Tony has recorded three critically acclaimed albums of his original compositions.\nIn this webinar Tony will outline his journey from local folk singer to singing activist for various social and political causes. Using historical and contemporary examples he will reflect on how the power of song can unite forces advocating for change. Tony will also outline his affinity for proportional representation and demonstrate that each of us has unique talents that can contribute to the fight for a better democracy.\nA writer with a social conscience, Tony penned the protest song Harperman in 2015. The video was a YouTube hit and the song became a centrepiece of political rallies across Canada and garnered the writer an international Spirit of Folk award. He followed that up with Number 45, a co-write enumerating the many disturbing attributes and policies of Donald Trump. Tony has written other socially relevant songs touching on issues including offshore tax havens, the oppression of indigenous people, homelessness and proportional representation. In 2018 Tony’s wrote and recorded the award-winning song and video called Vote Yes for Pro Rep in support of the 2018 BC referendum to changes the voting system.\nTony’s much-loved anthem Circle of Song was recently published in Rise Again, the sequel to the popular Rise Up Singing folk songbook.\nBy registering, you will receive updates from Fair Vote Canada.
