SUMMARY:#GenClimateAction: How youth-led litigation is making Canadian legal history
DESCRIPTION:oin this exclusive conversation with key figures in Ecojustice’s most ambitious climate lawsuit to date — one that is rewriting Canadian legal history. This is your opportunity to hear directly from Zoe Keary-Matzner and Shaelyn Wabegijig, two of the seven young people who launched a constitutional challenge against the Ontario government for its failure to take action on the climate crisis. They will be joined by members of their legal team — lawyers Danielle Gallant (Ecojustice) and Spencer Bass (Stockwoods LLP) — who will be on hand to answer your questions. This case is making history and paving the way for future efforts to protect our climate. In November, we celebrated a victory when the Ontario Superior Court dismissed the Ford government’s motion to strike this case. It marked the first time a Canadian court has ever allowed climate Charter litigation like this to proceed. But now, the youth applicants are preparing to fend off a second attempt by the government to shut down their lawsuit. Stay on the case with us: Join this special conversation moderated by Fridays for Future organizer Emma Lim. Reserve your spot today! Speakers: Danielle Gallant is an Ecojustice lawyer and holds a Master’s in Global Sustainability and Environmental Law from the University of Ottawa. Emma Lim is a youth climate activist and founder of the #NoFutureNoChildren pledge. Shaelyn Wabegijig is one of seven young people taking the Ford government to court for weakening Ontario’s 2030 climate target. Spencer Bass is a lawyer at Stockwoods LLP and served as a law clerk to the Hon. Justice Suzanne Côté at the Supreme Court of Canada. Zoe Keary-Matzner is one of seven young people taking the Ford government to court for weakening Ontario’s 2030 climate target.\n
