SUMMARY:Reclaim the Park, Reclaim the Planet – No Racism & Hate in a Livable Future
DESCRIPTION:Reclaim Dentonia Park coalition presents an online public forum\nReclaim the Park – Reclaim the Planet: No Racism and Hate in a Livable Future\nWed Sept 23rd 7pm\nMerv King Algonquin activist from the Timiskaming First Nation and USW member\nDr Nasima Akter Executive Director of Bangladeshi-Canadian Community Services\nCarolyn Egan President, Steelworkers Toronto Area Council & Labour Council executive\nTeresa Gomes Director, Sisters Across Oceans (SAO), a non-profit empowering Bengali women; environmental and climate change policy researcher for the federal government..\nZoom Link: https://zoom.us/j/97695980632\nPeople in marginalized communities suffer systemic discrimination, racist abuse and violence and higher rates of Covid infection and death. In Dentonia Park in June, when a racist assault was followed by racist, neglectful policing, a coalition of union and local groups came together to demand justice and mobilized the community to stand up to racism in one of the city’s most diverse communities.\nThe climate crisis has been caused by cumulative carbon emissions over the last century by the most powerful economies, yet it is people in the countries in the global south who are bearing the brunt of the impact as many are forced to migrate away from flood, fire, drought and famine. Ongoing Canadian colonialism forces pipelines through Indigenous land to pursue oil profits while scientists warn that we have to rapidly shift to low carbon energy production to mitigate the climate crisis.\nHow do we ensure solutions to the climate crisis are inclusive to all regardless of their background or the colour of their skin?\nJoin the discussion!\nA Fridays for Future Toronto Climate Justice Week partner event\n
